Lately, I've been thinking a lot about taking a different route on my weight loss journey. I've been thinking about going on a liquid diet.
I hope that didn't shock any of you! It's just that I need to lose A LOT of weight. Carrying around an extra 200 pounds of body weight is NOT easy! It is not healthy. To put it in simplest terms... it is just not good!
So... I was just wondering... have any of you ever been on a liquid diet? If so, what were the results? What are the pros and cons?
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

yes I have
I lost like 35 lbs
I gained it all back plus some in like 2 months after.
I personally needed to work on my real issues regarding movement and food before my lifestyle became more progressively freeing and healthy.
I did one years ago, lost almost 100 lbs in about 6 months. Gained it all back when I went back to real food. I think they can work but I also think they are hard to stick too and I'm not sure what you do afterwards. I think the old fashion way of just eating more whole foods and exercising (just walking everyday when I started) is the long term solution. But I say do whatever you think will get you going.
I did the old Slimfast diet many moons ago. Lost the weight but also gained some nasty gallstones.
Just make sure you do your research--I'm sure that there are some healthy alternatives out there.
Good luck!
If there is anything I've learned about weight loss it's that it is all in your head. When it comes to losing weight, we are our own worst enemies. I've maintained a 90 lb loss for a year now and I've done it eating real food, and definitely have had my fair share of indulgences. In the long run I don't think a liquid diet would work. It might be a way to drop some pounds fast but what will happen when you start eating real food again? If it will help you change your long term behaviors with food (ie getting over binging, something that is still hard for me) then it could be OK but I personally wouldn't do it. I refuse to do anything I wouldn't do for the rest of my life to lose weight. When I started out I wish I had known how much harder maintaining is than losing. There really is no rush. Good luck whatever you decide!
Hey - A Blob Blog is doing a liquid diet...she may be past that phase of it, but she's had great success with it!
Do what works for you!!!
Good luck!
I personally have not however, I have a close friend who did. He has lost 90 lbs. on the program and plans to lose maybe 15-20 more. It is totally medically supervised and he has stuck with it and it has been very effective for him.
I haven't done a liquid diet, other than a day long juice fast. My honest opinion is "don't do it!" It's an extreme measure taken that can help you drop weight, but it's not maintainable. You can't live on liquids, nor would you want to. A liquid diet doesn't help you learn new habits and handle your eating behaviors in a healthy way that you can sustain for your entire life. So many times with these extreme measures we push ourselves BACKWARDS. Before the diet we have a "last supper" then when we're done with the diet we have a "hooray it's over" week. I'd encourage you to try starting implementing more healthy eating behaviors instead of going to extreme, temporary measures.
And I write this as someone who is currently 379 pounds, down 76 from 455 pounds. I know it's a struggle with so much weigh to lose, but you can do it.
I have tried liquid diets before, and personally it didn't work for me. The hunger is difficult to deal with, a lot of the shakes have a lot of syrup in the so they don't really fill you up, na dit's difficult to get the nutrrients you need. I alos found it a little expensive.
Not to be completely negative, an alternative could be to go partially liquid, then have a meal a day or something? be careful though, liquid diets can slow your metabolism which will make things harder in the long run.
The shakes I used were these: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/pl/lean.html they seemed the best because they focused on a 40/30/30 ratio, which I found to be more filling than the syrupy #slimfast-esque ones.
I had to do a liquid diet after my lap band surgery, for about 10 days. It was horrible, I was hungry all the time. I know it CAN work, but I think it is sooo easy to gain the weight back. It could give you a jump start...just be careful; wouldn't want to see you gain it back while eating food (even super healthy stuff!).
I haven't done a liquid diet before, but I have gone VLCD (very low calorie diet). It worked for me. I lost about forty pounds, was feeling great... But I lost the weight too fast and ended up in the hospital to get my gallbladder out. I think you can do this and that it can help motivate you. I just ask that you please be careful because these things can make you lose weight very fast, which can mean you'll lose your gallbladder as well.
You could always try replacing your biggest meal or two biggest meals with shakes and then have one normal meal so it's not such a shock to the system.
Wow this is interesting! We're miles apart yet somehow we're thinking on the same track.
I'm actually starting a liquid diet this coming week. Getting all my ducks in a row. I'll be havimg one meal a day and meal replacemant liquids. I'll be cutting back calories too. I won't be going the normal Slim Fast shakes or some of the other main ones advertised. It's the sugars in those that worry me. If you're interested in kowing what I'm going with, email me. :)
As mentioned by a few others, hunger is to be the main factor. So persistance and consistency are key.
I've got a few other things in the works but will start the liquid diet first.
Good luck! And put some thought into what/which one you pursue.
Been there, done that. They work but you have to learn to eat proper meals.
I'm thinking about what I am doing and will get back to you. Meantime I've given you an award which you will find on my blog. http://withgodnothingistoohard.blogspot.com/
I hope you can find time to do it.
My first impulse when I read this was: No way in Heck! Don't do it!
But then I thought about it. Some of us need a jump start. You will notice most of the comments are that they gained the weight plus extra back - that's the major downfall on a liquid diet. If you haven't learned how to eat properly, when you switch to real food, the lbs will come back with a vengeance.
If you are considering it, check out a major medical center's wellness programs. I'm not sure about your insurance situation, but that's where I would start. The situation will be similar to weight watchers - having to attend meetings probably monthly with a weigh-in. This should be a safer route than going it alone because the meetings should be geared to teaching proper food portions, "eat this not that" concept, etc.
If you go it alone, make your own smoothies - don't do store bought. Use natural foods not synthetic proteins or other powders. Make sure you use low fat yogurts/milks, fruit, spinach, oatmeal, peanut butter. No need for added sugars. Play around with your smoothies to find out what you like.
And most of all make sure you eat at least 1 real meal a day! Treat this like Slim Fast, 2 smoothies and 1 meal with sensible snacks.
I'm not a dietitian nor physician - just a gal trying to drop some pounds.
I’m so glad that I came across this blog. It’s great to see someone else who is into living a healthy and fit lifestyle. I myself has lost 125 lbs. and my weight loss story will be featured in the November 2010 issue of Shape magazine. This is really exciting for me! I also have a blog http://www.LauraGetsFit.com which documents my own weight loss and fitness endeauvers. Come check it out if you’re interested :) Anyway, I look forward to reading more of your weight loss journey. Take care! <3 Laura
I, too, lost and then gained on a liquid diet. It's like putting a Band-Aid on the problem because eventually you need to eat solid food again. Plus, the liquid diet made me constipated :-(
I've had the most success doing it the old fashioned way: eating good food and exercising. Best of luck with whatever method you choose!
I tried one a while ago, and got pretty much the same results as everyone else - it works great, but the results don't last.
For now, I've just been trying to eat intuitively - when I'm hungry I eat, I eat as many whole foods as possible, and I exercise every day. It works for me, but I understand it isn't perfect for everyone. I started 6 weeks ago with a long-term goal of 210 lbs. to lose, and I'm down 28 lbs. already.
I'm looking forward to reading more about your journey! Good luck! ♥
The only liquid diets that are ever effective are the ones that are physician supervised. Generally, they aren't recommended - most people who do them gain back the weight they lose very quickly when they go off especially if they're not on a physician supervised program. I even had a friend do a physician supervised program and she still gained it all back.
It took me a while to respond to this, so I apologize for that first. I will also add that I have never been "truly overweight" so my comment doesn't come from experience.
Anyway, I wanted to say - don't be afraid to try the liquid diet for "pride" reasons. In the end you will need to work on whatever personal issues you have, but for right now getting this weight off your body is critical to your health. That being said, look for ways to work on the personal issues along with the health issues at the same time, and proceed with caution when choosing a plan. Make sure it's one that will provide you with sufficient nutrients and isn't too extreme. Hope that helps.
I may not comment often, but I believe in you!
Hi! Long time reader and first time commenter here. Your post moved me to share. I've never done a liquid diet, although I did the Master Cleanse 4 times, I don't really consider it a diet. I did it solely to detox my body and jump start a healthy eating lifestyle. I lost 20 pounds in 15 days. The weight loss was great, but it wasn't my purpose, because I knew that once food was reintroduced, I would gain the weight back. However, I was able to maintain it for a while, because I changed my eating habits. I didn't deprive myself of things that I liked. I ate them in moderation. Like NotJustCelery, it was important for me to find something that I could do for the rest of my life. It was a pretty good experience and the results were pretty positive, but I came to a point where I didn't want to do the Cleanse anymore. I no longer felt good about doing it, so I haven't done one since.
I did write a few blog posts, (definitely not a fake blog), about my experience and if anyone is interested and has questions, feel free to email me. :-)
