My Husband Really Turned Me On...

Photobucket

To spinach, that is! (Get your mind out of the gutter! Yes, I'm talking to YOU! hehe)

Seriously... prior to my marriage a few years ago... the closest I came to eating spinach was watching Popeye cartoons on TV as a child. I thought that spinach was some gloppy green goo that only came in a can. I figured that because it was portrayed as being so good for Popeye... it probably tasted like poo.

Boy was I wrong! Thanks to my hubby... spinach became a staple of our diet early on in our marriage. And I currently eat it almost every day!

I eat it fresh in salads and wraps. I eat it cooked in soups and stews. I eat it sauteed as a side dish with garlic and olive oil. It's a fantastic addition to a yummy omelette. Honestly... I just cannot get enough spinach in my diet! And I can't believe that I lived so many years of my life having never tasted it!

And, as you know... Popeye was right! Spinach really is good for you!

It's "low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Niacin and Zinc, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese."

What are some healthy foods that someone else turned you on to that YOU now can't live without?

I can say that I still haven't met a veggie that lights my fire... lol

Spinach?

I love melon. My Mum always has it in this summer (we're both Weightwatching) and for small points I can eat half of a galia melon.

Spinach? I like rocket or arugula... but spinach? Good with chicken? I'll give it a go.

I never tried sweetpotatoes by themselves before because of a tramatizing incident as a kid where someone tried to pass a sweet potato pie of as a pumpkin pie (my favorite food ever). After all the hype on health food blogs about sweet potato fries, I had to try them and I FELL IN LOVE!

I'm really amazed at how yummy veggies are in general! Growing up my family ate canned green beans and canned corn and that's it, so I had no idea that fresh veggies, prepared in all manner of ways, could be so fantastic!

I can't say I adore spinach though...although it's good enough in salads and whatnot. I'm planning to try to incorporate more of via the infamous Green Monster and I am excited about that. :-)

I so wish that I could like spinach (as well as tomatoes) but I just dont. I enjoy baby spinach raw in salads, but the smell of cooking spinach makes me sick to my stomach :( I've taken to adding it to smoothies though (the raw stuff) just to get it in since it's so blasted good for you!

Spinach is SOOOOO good when cooked, and not particularly interesting when raw. I have had raw spinach in salads over the past 3.5 months, but why no cooked spinach? Bad Hallie.

Man, you had me going! I eat spinach everyday too! In my green monsters! Yes, so good for you! Glad you are enjoying it!

I love spinach too! I eat it raw though. Still can't handle the cooked stuff. But in a salad it's my fav. I have it almost every day. :)

I love spinach too! My 3 year old and husband as well, but not so much with my 9 year old. We eat it in everything from quiche (which I make crustless and lowfat, and sooo yummy) to salads, to soups to a side dished sauted in garlic and a splash of olive oil. Yum!!

I love spinach in a salad or wrap or otherwise uncooked - but for some reason once it is cooked, I HATE the taste of it! I always hated yellow squash as a kid, but last summer a friend told me to try sauteeing in a little butter or olive oil and adding salt, pepper, and a bit of brown sugar. Yum! I can't get enough now - I would eat it every night if I could.

Spinach is my favourite 'lettuce'. It can do everything lettuce can do, only more nutritiously, and if it gets a little wilty in the fridge, you can throw it into a cooked dish and no one is the wiser!

Love spinach!

I used to think that spinach meant those frozen blocks that look like brillo pads. Recently I have become tunned in to the joys of spinach.

I love my spinach with mashed potato and a cooked egg. Yum.

I was guessing where you were going with the post. I was thinking spinach & whipped cream during foreplay! :) Spinach is one of the greatest veggies ever and so versatile. Good for you for trying something new!

Let me tell you about the goodies I love. Green monster smoothies, edamame, sweet potatoes, cherries, sushi...

OK, need to stop, getting hungry for dinner.

I love Marsh Mellos Cereal as a low fat snack. Only one cup & it satisfies me.

And I've become a big fan of frozen veggies!

I am known for my adversion to any kind of veggie. In fact I can recall long periods of time avoiding them.

Actually a friend got me a supermarket gift card the other day and as a joke picked out one that had pictures of veggies on it. "do I have to buy vegtables with it?" was my first question

My trick is in drinking lots of v-8 juice. Maybe not the best, but better than chugging um... maple syrup.

After all, avoiding veggies is the foolsfitness way!-Alan

Oh man, I love spinach -- far and away my favorite veggie! Before I gave myself and my eating a massive lifestyle overhaul, though, I was convinced I hated spinach, along with pretty much every veggie aside from onions, peppers, peas and sweet potatoes.

Stuff I thought I hated but ended up loving: spinach, lima beans, KALE!, squash, brussels sprouts, artichoke, cauliflower, eggplant -- the list goes on. Turns out most veggies are delicious when properly prepared, and not boiled to smithereens like I was always used to having them prepared...
